Bio
Collin Douma (b. 1974, Woodstock, Ontario) is a visual artist working in painting, sculpture, and mixed media from his studio near Woodstock, New York. He received his diploma in traditional animation from Algonquin College, Ottawa, in 1995, and has continued his art education at Toronto School of Art, Woodstock School of Art, Unison Arts Center, and Spring Street Studio in New York.
Douma's work interrogates humanity's relationship with the natural world through what he calls "magical surrealism for the Anthropocene era." His ongoing United Fauna series envisions animals weaponizing human technology for survival against environmental collapse. Recent sculptural works in the UF3D series transform discarded materials, including acrylic putty, metal, and found objects, into hybrid beings that function as instruments of resistance.
His artistic philosophy centers on the belief that "art is how to be defiant against entropy, while admitting it has a point, creating meaning that lasts just long enough to matter." This perspective drives his exploration of cultural chaos and environmental destruction across multiple media.
Douma has exhibited across the United States and Canada, as well as in the Netherlands, Belgium, and France. He has delivered several solo exhibitions around the Hudson Valley, with upcoming exhibitions scheduled for 2025. Douma's practice asks fundamental questions about humanity's place in nature: "If nature is everything in the universe except us, are we its enemy or its consequence?"
