In Asia, they are symbols of strength, harmony, and victory. Europeans linked them to black magic, doing the devil's work. Nobody asked the dragonfly.
Before it ever flies, a dragonfly lives underwater. Up to five years in the dark, hunting, molting, waiting. When they finally emerge, they are the most lethal predator on Earth. A 95% kill rate. But their time in the air is short. Eight weeks if they're lucky.
Globally, wetlands are disappearing three times faster than forests, taking the dragonfly with them. One in six species is now threatened with extinction.
Dragon Patrol has no commander. No call sign protocol. No designated formation. They appear at dusk over standing water, three or four at a time, wings catching the last light like stained glass of church sanctuaries.
The Zuni of New Mexico believed dragonflies brought rain. Now these ancient fliers circle what's left, so the nymphs below can earn their wings to stand guard over even less.
